Politics Daily backs down on Papal Nuncio: throws victim in bad light

We said that Archbishop Sambi had been Nuncio in England. This is inaccurate. Archbishop Sambi has worked all over the world in some very interesting and sensitive posts:

He was transferred to the Apostolic Nunciature in Jerusalem on July 19, 1971, and subsequently to the Apostolic Nunciatures in Cuba in 1974, in Algeria in 1978, in Nicaragua in 1979, in Belgium in 1981, and then in India in May, 1984 with the rank of Counselor.

Archbishop Sambi was consecrated as Bishop and made Titular Archbishop of Belcastro on November 9, 1985.

He was nominated Pro-Apostolic Nuncio in Burundi on October 10, 1985, Pro-Apostolic Nuncio in Indonesia on November 28, 1991, and Apostolic Nuncio in Israel and Cyprus, and Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine on June 6, 1998.

It should incline you to believe the truth of the report from the Daily more now than before. They don't give much of a rationale for thinking that besides the fact that they had misgivings. Unfortunately, they insist on overshadowing Mr. Wojnowski's claims with slurs on his mental health, suggesting perhaps, that he is being ungrateful in spurning the offers of counseling. It's a dirty, smarmy article.

Look, he's a man who'd give most Holy Communion to a public sinner and phony Catholic like John Kerry is either a coward or a fool.

But what of Archbishop Sambi? Well, this offers an opportunity to criticize ++Sambi and throw a spotlight on some of his other acts which show him to be the kind of man who's willing to do his homework, but perhaps has a different agenda when it comes to episcopal appointments. You might ask, what does +Sambi's all-too-professional acts as Nuncio have to do with treating an alleged sex abuse victim with contempt? What does it have to do with the accusations that he made those insulting and contemptible comments in the first place? As Nuncio, he is responsible for selecting good men for the Episcopate. He provides the Holy Father with three candidates, but the Holy Father may choose someone else, as he most certainly did when he chose Father Wagner of Linz to the chagrin of the Austrian Bishop's Conference. Well anyway, we're concerned with a bully Archbishop because there's a certain type and set behaviors with churchmen, and human beings in general, when they're confronted by something they can't control but throws light on what they truly are -- wolves. How many times have laymen come to Bishops asking for bread and they've gotten snakes and contemptuous officialese sneers?

Archbishop Sambi's appointments in the past do not inspire much faith in report from Politics Daily, that he is "charitable". What kind of a man would preside over such deplorable appointments as these? He gave us Archbishop Wuerl, but he also presided over the appointment of Bishop Frank Dewane of Venice, who contemned women's foot washing and yoga. He also gave us Bishop Pates of Des Moines, whose church wreckovation is legendary with definitive contacts to homosexual activists with the Call to Action and James Moudry. And he gave us another very bad Bishop Frederick Campbell, Ph.D. whose heretical opinions against evangelizing the Jews and the Jewish question are as legendary as they are condescending. Did he give more of an ear of compassion to delators who reported on the bad behavior and un-Catholic acts of the men he chooses to appoint? Well, Arcbishop Sambi has done un-Catholic things himself, so who can fault him?

Of course, he's no ++Jadot who gave us such poor performers as +Gumbleton, +O'Brien, +Maida and +Hubbard, but the American Episcopacy still suffers from the poor harvests of seminarians in the 70s and 80s.

From the look of his non-clerical attire, his many poor episcopal appointments, we expect a man on parade who's incapable of treating a angry Pole with some equanimity and respect. Condescending to offer him the services of a psychologist is just what we'd expect from such a man, such an administration, so faultlessly showing a face of sleek conformity and kindness to the world and snarling like a ravening wolf when there seem to be no repercussions.

Papal Nuncio plays the Bully outside the Washington Nunciature

The proud Levite, allegedly diplomatic and a Nuncio, treads the jaunty streets of D.C., sans soutane, in a pricey burberry scarf and cane, hurling insults at an eccentric and frail old man who pickets the Washington Nunciature asking for the redress of a crime committed against him when he was 15. This was reported by Huffington Press. Yes, Archbishop Sambi has a well-documented reputation for aiding and abetting the enemies of the Church and he's doing a great job for them here, and like a classic bully, he acts with impunity.

This enjoyable D.C. assignment wasn't Archbishop Sambi's only assignment, he's been all over the world, working as a Vatican diplomat; helping the bad guys mostly. Back in that time when ++Sambi was assigned to the UK, Austen Ivereigh could still be counted upon to help smooth things over in an impending abuse imbroglio against his master, Cardinal Cormac-McCarthy. The Archbishop Nuncio, Sambi, was going to parties and helping the process along, especially in trying to conceal the fact that other UK Bishops, like Hollis, were not doing their jobs and working to undermine or otherwise denigrate Catholic teaching in the UK via Tablet with a little help from the ever-helpful BBC; those were the days. One unnamed source speculated that the Archbishop's knowledge of England was limmited to watching Monty Python.

There's a discussion of this Nuncio in this New Oxford Review article, Bishops, Nuncios & Delators. It is a fascinating article and descibes events and back ground, beginning with Pro-homosexual ++McCarrick's welcoming of the new Nuncio to the USA. We get a picture which fits the malicious man who come to his D.C. office and lashes out at a helpless eccentric as he goes to work.

New USA Nuncio Replaced by Someone Close to Cardinal Burke

Edit: We were all over this in July. Move over libs, there should be some better episcopal appointments and faster responses to Liturgical abuses. Oh yeah.

Editor: his slot in the Governorate of the Vatican will be taken up by someone who's close to Cardinal Burke, Msgr Sciacca, a judge in the Roman Rota. Understanding that this is an earlier release and that some of the other blogs were reticent about Nuncio Sambi's replacement, Katholisches sounded certain about it.

[Washington from July 13] Curial Bishop Carlo Maria Viganò the Secretary of the Governorate Council of Vatican City, will be the new Apostolic Nuncio of the United States of America. The present ambassador to Washington, Archbishop Pietro Sambi will be recalled back to Rome and undertake a new leading role in the Roman Curia.

The Curial Bishop has been leading a restrictive organizational reform for various areas of the Curia over the past two years. That has not made him many friends. In the long run it involved friction with the Secretary of State, so the current personnel changes are intended to bring peace again for all sides. The role of the Papal Ambassador in Washington is as much a step up in rank and is also an important as well as sensitive position.

The successor as number two of the Governatorial Advisor will be canon lawyer, Msgr Giuseppe Sciacca, who is at present judge of the Roman Rota. Of him it is said that he also has earned the trust and praise of both the Holy Father and the Cardinal Secretary [+Burke].

Archbishop Viganò would be the third Apostolic Nuncio in the United States of America and only the fifth representative from the Holy See. It was first under President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II that in 1984 full diplomatic relations were established between the Holy See and the United States. In the same year the USA sent William Wilson as its first ambassador to the Holy See in Rome. Since 2009, Miguel Diaz who was appointed by President Obama has occupied this post.

In the USA there is a longstanding opposition against diplomatic relations. At first in 1893 the first contact at this level was established. The representatives of the Holy See had however only the rank of apostolic delegates.

Pope Names New Eparch for Armenian Catholics in Canada and US

Editor: An Eparch is a Bishop who rules a particular territory, like a Diocese or an Eparchy. Armenia is the eldest daughter of the Church, the first Land to embrace Catholicism back in the two hundreds, even before the St. Constantine the Great's Edict of Toleration. They say Mass differently but share the Catholic Faith whole and entire.

WASHINGTON — Pope Benedict XVI has named Archpriest Mikaël Mouradian, superior of the Convent of Notre Dame in Bzommar, Lebanon, as the new bishop of the Eparchy of Our Lady of Nareg in New York for Armenian Catholics.

The appointment of Lebanon-born Bishop Mouradian was publicized in Washington, May 21, by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.

Bishop-designate Mouradian, who succeeds Bishop Manuel Batakian, 81, is a member of the Lebanon-based Institute of the Patriarchal Clergy of Bzommar. Among positions he has held is head of Caritas Armenia.

The New York-based eparchate includes about 25,000 people in the United States and 10,000 in Canada. The largest communities are in Los Angeles and Montreal.

Vatican Announces New Nuncio for USA

Editor:  We were all over this one in the English speaking sphere.  NCR published a rather unhappy looking photo of him.  Perhaps they know the vice is clamping down on their reign of spiritual mediocrity?  Maybe he means business?

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI named Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, 70, to be the new nuncio to the United States.

In his most recent position, the Italian archbishop had served for two years as secretary-general of the commission governing Vatican City. He succeeds the late Archbishop Pietro Sambi in Washington.
Just minutes after his assignment was announced Oct. 19, Archbishop Vigano told Catholic News Service he hoped to get to the United States in time for the U.S. bishops' general assembly Nov. 14-16.

Archbishop Burke's Influence set to Grow (NCR)

John Allen of NCR has just commented about Archbishop Burke's appointment. He is confirming speculation elsewhere that his appointment to Rome to the Apostolic Signatura, and now, to the Congregation of Bishops as the fifth American along with the likes of Cardinals Law, Francis Stafford, Justin Rigali and Levada will put him in a position to be very influential indeed, given time, when it comes to appointing new Bishops since his confreres are not typically conservative.

We've already noticed a conservative trend in the appointments of Bishops like the failed attempt to appoint Msgr Wagner of Linz, and two other conservative appointments like Bishop Sirba of Duluth, Minnesota and Bishop Lavoir to New Ulm, Minnesota much earlier this year.

Unfortunately, Archbishop Burke will have to contend with the Papal Nuncio, Cardinal Piero Sambi who has frowned himself on the Archbishop's pugnacious statements, according to Allen. Cardinal Samebi is problematic also for other reasons in that he has presided over many awful appointments in the past, relying not so much on knowledge and prudence so much as unduly trusting liberal prelates in the countries where he has worked as Nuncio, especially retarding Ecumenism in England by appointing Bishops especially hostile to an influx of conservative Anglicans by Bishop Hollis of Portmouth. (See, Bishops, Nuncios and Delators, Oxford Review) Fortunately, Arcbishop Samebi is due to submit his resignation in four years time when he reaches the age of 75.
