Immemorial Rite: Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest Entrusted With Parish Work in Naples

Church of the Confraternity of Mary, Help of Christians, in Naples
(Rome) Naples archbishop, Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, has commissioned the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICRSS) the task of celebrating the Immemorial Mass of All Ages in the diocese and to take over the pastoral care of the faithful of the old rite.
The celebration of Holy Mass will take place Sunday and Feasts at at  6 o'clock in the Church ofthe  Arciconfraternita Santa Maria del Soccorso, the Archconfraternity of Mary Help of Christians, in the district of Arenella. The church is not to be confused with the parish church, which is a few meters away.
The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest has sent two canons, Father Louis Valadier and the new priest, Father Florian Braun to Naples to meet with the Archbishop's request. Today, on the feast of Saint Januarius, the patron of Naples, the two priests took up their pastoral work.
With the appointment of the priests also ends the previous summer break in the celebration in the traditional rite, which was set for two months. It's a victory, and the faithful are very relieved as the Coetus Fidelium of Naples has announced.
The new Canon was ordained in 2012 for the Institute of Christ the King. Most recently he was scholastic and choirmaster at order's own seminary in Gricigliano in Tuscany. Canon Florian Braun is a very new priest, who was ordained last July along with another ten candidates for the Institute of Christ the King and Higher Priest.
The Church of the Confraternity was, after the publication of the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum to become the home of the faithful of the Roman Rite. The church is located in its pristine state. In contrast, the high altar dating from 1607 was demolished in the nearby parish church during the post-conciliar liturgical reform.
In the city there are three more Mass locations in the traditional rite according to the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum. Nowhere, unfortunately is the traditional rite allowed at a reasonable time on Sunday morning.

The Church Blooms With Tradition -- Example of Limmerick

Sacred Heart Church in Limmerick
(Dublin) It would be a euphemism if one were to describe the pontificate of Pope Francis as "favorable" for tradition. Where Pope Francis is not even restricted to brutally attacking  against the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, he generates through gestures and multiple statements, a climate in which other leaders in the Church whether rightly or not,  are harassed for their connection to Tradition by citing him in many ways.  Equality and equal treatment can only be spoken of  in rare cases.
This open or latent discrimination in the dioceses and religious communities interferes with the growth of the tradition, but above all it prevents missionary work. In a state of mere toleration,  tradition is hedged in on an allotment. There they may be, but  no visibility is possible. If they take such on themselves, they must expect reprisals. This results in a heavily damaged Church in  Europe itself, deprived of  the medicine they need for recovery. A form of self-hatred, the unconscious self-mutilation or blindness?

The Successful Example of Limerick

Sacred Heart Church of Limerick
At the beginning of Advent nevertheless, an example with good results has been reported.
In Ireland, the Jesuits sold in 2006 the most popular Sacred Heart Church, in Limerick City. Limerick is a Viking settlement, which was created with the name Hlymrekr and   first occupied in 812. The city now has nearly 100,000 inhabitants and is the third largest city in Ireland.
The buyer of the church was a construction company that wanted to convert the church into a swimming pool and wellness center. The construction company came but in financial difficulties and was unable to realize the conversion of the Sacred Heart Church. Then a "miracle", happened as Messa in Latino reported.   In 2012, the church was bought back from its profane, six year long ownership by the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest (ICRSS)  and resurfaced. Due to the special Old Ritual situation,  the Institute was able to purchase the entire complex of a former Jesuit college, church and garden for around 700,000 euros instead of the originally requested four million.
That Old Ritual Communities often have to build or buy new churches, is a testament to the previously mentioned "special treatment". In this specific case, the Jesuits had already made the sale. The successful buyback was overseen by the young canon, who now works at the Sacred Heart Church, with particular satisfaction.

Like a Sardine: Instead of a Seminary Interreligious Welcome Center for Immigrants

As young as the priests are, the canonically erected instituted  Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, established in 1990 is also young,  based in the Italian Gricigliano. The Institute's own seminary in Tuscany is far too small to accommodate the number of seminarians. In Italy it was not yet possible, however, to find a second seminary. The community wanted to buy a  pontifical seminary vacant for decades in Sardinia. When the bishop in charge found out, he prevented the purchase. Instead of a seminary of  an Old Ritual Community an inter-religious and inter-cultural "Welcome Center" for immigrants has been established in its place. (see "Interreligious and intercultural center" instead Seminary of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest ).

Oldest Sacred Heart Church of Ireland

Celebration in the traditional rite in Limerick
The Jesuit Order  had begun in 1865 with the construction of the church, which was completed and dedicated in 1868. It is the oldest church in Ireland dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The interior has been designed with large mosaics. On the large organ loft is a Telford organ, highly valuedby church musicians from 1924. The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest  has been afforded a successful restoration of the Telford organ, by restorer Padraig O'Donovan from Corck.
The Jesuits sold everything with the sale of the church, including all the equipment,  liturgical objects, confessionals and pews but also the altar, the Stations of the Cross, and even the tabernacle.
Painfully,  the Sacred Heart statue which was   especially venerated by the faithful was found to be missing. It was always lit and could be seen immediately from any entrance. The church belonged to the city's most visited. The Sacred Heart Friday on the first Friday of the month was firmly anchored in the population.

The Moral of the Story

Today,  the church is again a thriving center of the Catholic Church. Daily Holy Mass is celebrated in the traditional rite.
Messa in Latino writes: "A beautiful story with a happy ending, and with a moral of the story which some do not like to hear: When we trust ourselves in humility and offer obedience to traditional orders and communities, then the church blooms anew".

Collapse of Diocesan Clergy in France -- Glimmers of Hope

(Paris) numbers are neither traditionalist nor modernist, but facts are being noticed.  In France, there are only 14,000 diocesan priests. About half of them are older than 75. This means that the situation is dramatic.
To conduct but one parish is  already a big job. In France it has become "normal" that a pastor has to take care of a dozen parishes. A regular celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is impossible. In most parishes  it is celebrated only occasionally. In the diocese of Langres, each priest must take care for an average of 50 parishes.  In short, it is almost resigned to a spiritual catastrophe. The numbers of priestly ordinations is also discouraging. In 2009, only 89 diocesan priests were ordained in France. Far too little to compensate for the decrease due to death. These numbers seem like reports coming from the front with the losses to an army. You could cry.
Fortunately, there is good and encouraging news coming from the seminaries of tradition. The traditional communities and dioceses have offspring. More, their seminars are full. It is therefore to be hoped that more old rite seminaries  will be opened. There is no danger that they remain empty, since there is a strong interest in tradition by young believers.

"Inter-Religious and Intercultural Center" Instead of Seminary of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

(Alghero) After it was empty and unused for more than 40 years, the traditional  Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest  has  negotiated the purchase the former Papal Seminary from Cuglieri in Alghero. The news made some Sardinian bishops so nervous that they were suddenly active after decades of disinterest. The purchase by the Catholic Canons Regular should be prevented. With success.
The 1990 canonically erected traditional Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest , which also has a German branch wanted the former Papal seminar avail as orden own seminary. The community enjoys many vocations, so that the current seminary in Tuscany has become too small (see report Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest Wants to Assume  Former Papal Seminary Cuglieri ).

Withdrawn From Sale Commitment in Sardinia  Region Again

Former Papal seminar Cuglieri is "inter-religious and inter-cultural center" to promote the integration of migrantsThe former Papal Seminary of Cuglieri had been transferred in 1970 by the bishops of the Mediterranean island to Cagliari.  Since then it has stood empty.  It was erected in 1927 at the expense of the Vatican and were purchased in 1976 by the Region of Sardinia. The region has since seen no use until 2012, the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest appeared as an interested party and submitted a bid.
Initially the region was delighted at the interest and had issued a sales commitment, but this was withdrawn under pressure from the bishops of Alghero and Oristano, again. The two bishops officially spoke out against a traditional  community  and were able to prevail in the Bishops' Conference of the island, although initially other bishops had expressed benevolence.

Bogeyman Tradition - Bishops Wanted to Prevent Establishment

The thwarting of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest by the bishops of the island has now finally succeeded. Last Friday the Sardinia Region and the Chairman of the Sardinian Bishops' Conference signed a common protocol. The former Pontifical Seminary of Cuglieri one of which is to be led by Caritas Sardinia  is going to become an "inter-religious and inter-cultural center" as the press service of the region announced.
The protocol signing was preceded by an agreement between Caritas and the Sardinian Bishops' Conference. The Bishops' Conference announced that the former seminary is for  "humanitarian progress to support the weak  and mercy  to serve as Emeritus of Pope Benedict XVI.  would have desired." [Wouldn't it be great if he publicly repudiated this?]

Instead of Priestly Formation "Interfaith" Integration of MigrantsCuglieri: more than 40 years was the former Papal Seminar empty. As the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest wanted to set up a seminary, the bishops were active - against the project.

The head of government of the region, Ugo Cappellacci said on the sidelines of the signing protocol that the buildings
"are now home to major national and international project."  To which what "significant" projects it should be accomplished, was not explained.
Signatories to the agreement are Prime Minister Ugo Cappellacci for the Region Sardinia, Archbishop Arrigo Miglio of Cagliari as chairman of the Bishops' Conference and Sardinian Andrea Loche, the mayor of Cuglieri.
The "inter-religious and inter-cultural center" is to become a "center of the integration of different peoples, that points to the future, as a symbol that integration is possible. Not by being sufferers, but by being encouraged and built up," said the press release.
The Protocol states that "future activity" to take place in the former seminary  will be especially for "education and research" on the topic of immigrant integration in the context of school-based initiatives. The former Pontifical Seminary of Cuglieri is to be for  "promoting the economic and social development and cooperation between Mediterranean countries and a place of encounter and dialogue".

Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest May Take Over Deserted Former Papal Seminary

(Alghero) The traditional Institute of Christ the King and High Priest (ICRSS) is negotiating with the Government of the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia for the purchase of the former Pontifical Seminary of Cuglieri (not to be confused with the Sardinian town of Cagliari). The region had bought the seminar after its abandonment in 1976 but since then it has not been used. For cost reasons, they want to sell it.
Canonically erected in 1990, the Old Rite Institute of Christ the King in submitted an offer to take over the entire building complex in April 2012, as it has experienced strong growth due to many vocations.
In the Sardinian Parliament a parliamentary motion was introduced, with which the government has been asked why the transfer to the Institute has not yet been done. Una Vox Cagliariits is suspicions that after the posting of the sale, the regional government has been pressured  by the bishops of Alghero and Oristano to prevent the establishment of the traditional institution on the island. How Messa in Latino reported, other bishops had initially welcomed the establishment of a branch of the ICRSS. But their approval was withdrawn under pressure from the bishops of Alghero and Oristano. Meanwhile, the believers of Cuglieri have started a petition for the handing over of the seminar complex to the traditional priest affiliated institution.
Cuglieri (Sardinian Cullieri) in Sardinia: block local bishops of Alghero and Oristano, that the Institute of Christ the King can take over the former seminarThe 3000 population community of Cuglieri (Sardinian Cullieri) is located in Central Sardinia and belongs to the province of Oristano (Sardinian Aristanis) and the diocese of Alghero (Aligehra Sardinian, Catalan Alguer). The place is just ten kilometers from the Mediterranean coast.
The bishops of Sardinia asked the Pope for financial support after the First World War for the construction of a joint seminary for the island.  In 1924 Pope Pius XI. met the request and the seminary was built at the expense of the Holy See, which is why it was given the honorary title "Pontifical Seminary."  The seminary was inaugurated in 1927 was built in the Pisan style of the 1300s and is similar in appearance to a medieval monastery. The simple style fitted well into the landscape of the houses that are built, modest and sober. The management of the houwse was handed over to the Jesuits. In 1970 the seminary was moved to Cagliari. Six years later the empty building was purchased by the Region of Sardinia.

In 2008 it was commissioned by Pope Benedict XVI., recognized canonically as a society of apostolic life of pontifical right. The monastery of the contemplative order is located near the General House and  Theological Seminary of the Institute of Christ the King and High Priest in Gricigliano in Tuscany.

Record Number of New Entrants in the Seminary of the Old Rite Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest

(Gricigliano)  The Institute of Christ the King and Sovereign Priest has shown a record number of new entrants to the institute's own seminary.  The new year shows 20 candidates, who will begin their academic year 2012/2013.  Msgr Micheal Schmitz offered this in the November Letter of the Institute.

The Institute of Christ the King and Sovereign Priest, canonically instituted in 1990 is a society of Apostolic and Papal right.  The founder is the Champagne, France born priest Gilles Wach.  He was responsible for clerical professions of the priestly society Opus Sacerdotal founded in Lourdes in 1964, who during the confused post-Conciliar period seeked to strengthen an unabbreviated continuation of the faith under the motto Doctrina, Fortitudo, Pietas.

The Way of Traditional Priestly Formation -- Once to Africa and Back

In the 80s of the previous century Msgr Gilles Wach found himself incardinated in the Archdiocese of then Archbishop of Genoa, Giuseppe Cardinal Siri in Italy, as the situation in French seminaries was no longer satisfactory to ensure a priestly formation with the significance of Catholic Tradition.  After a call for help to the former Prefect of the Congregation of Faith, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, and the then emeritus Prefect of the Congregation of Clergy, Silvio Cardinal Oddi, it came to the founding of a new society which was obligated to offer the Tridentine Mass in 1988.

The canonical recognition of the Society of Apostolic Life followed in 1990 through the then Bishop of Moil in Gabun, because of the difficulties then for communities connected to Tradition.  Msgr Cyraique-Simeon Obama had been a student of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in Libreville.  Since then, Msgr Wach became General Prior of the Institute.

Establishment of the General House of the Priestly Seminary in Gricigliano

With the help of Augustinus Cardinal Mayer OSB structures were found in Tuscany which were lent by the Benedictine Abbey of Fontgambault.  In 1991 the then Archbishop of Florence, Silvano Cardinal Piovanelli published the necessary decree for the foundation of a General House and a priestly seminary for the Institute.  Thus the new society could come from Africa to Europe and settle in the small town of Pontassieve in the Archdiocese of Florence.  In Gricigliano, a part of the city is located the Gernal House and the Seminary of St. Philipp Neri of the Institute.  Since then the Institute has experienced enormous growth.

The Institute numbers 61 priests, six deacons and more than 80 seminarians.  Msgr Wach found important support in the building of a community which brings the Institute to the German speaking areas.  The settlement of the German District of the Institute is located in Bavarian, Gmain.  The Institute follows the form of Choirmasters and Monastic Scholars.

The 2008 Recognition of the Soceity of Apostolic and Papal Right

In 2006 the Institute established the Heart of Jesus Society as a lay association of the faithful for the spiritual support of the Institute.  In 2008 the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest was recognized by the Papal Commission Ecclesia Dei as a Society of Apostolic Life and Papal Right.  The Institute celebrated the Holy Mass and cared for the Liturgy of the Hours completely in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.  A female branch of contemplative sisters also belongs to the community.

The Mission of the Institute of Christ the King and Sovereign Priest  " is the honor of God and the sanctification of priests in the service of the Church and souls. Its specific aim is missionary: to spread the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ in all spheres of human life. Our work is carried out under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, to Whom the Institute is consecrated."

Old Jesuit Church Taken Over by Traditionalist Order in Ireland

Edit: Sacred Heart in Limmerick was once a church run by the declining Jesuit order. Other orders, however, are growing and in a very symbolic way, the Institute of Christ the King is taking over the old church and restoring it to its proper use. Here we cite from Conleth's Catholic Heritage Association:

The prior of the Church of the Sacred Heart is a 38 year-old priest, Canon Wulfran Lebocq, choir-master of the Institute and permanently resident in the diocese since 2010. For the time being, the community in Limerick is composed of four members, whose average age is 32.

In Limerick, the Institute of Christ the King, supported by many local residents and a large group of friends in Ireland and abroad, intends to restore the Church of the Sacred Heart to its original purpose as a vibrant spiritual and cultural centre and a beautiful place of worship through a dynamic and open community life as a spiritual family. However, this will require a careful historical restoration before the Church may be opened once again to the greater public.
The Institute of Christ the King celebrates the classical Roman Liturgy, the Latin Mass, in its Extraordinary Form according to the liturgical books promulgated by Blessed Pope John XXIII in 1962. This liturgy, promoted by Blessed John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI in various documents, attracts today an ever greater number of people, especially young adults, students and families. The Institute is accustomed to see a lively family of faithful in its churches and wishes to bring the uplifting beauty of sacrality and genuine culture to all.

This beautiful church at the Crescent is still today a special architectural jewel, and many deplored its closing and long-term vacancy. The Institute of Christ the King, which has a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, truly desires to reopen this church for the benefit of all, in close collaboration with the local civil and ecclesiastical authorities. In this way, yet another sign of a brighter future will again come alive in Limerick.

Here's a video and brief description complete with shots of the church:
This iconic building is situated at the Crescent, on O'Connell Street, Limerick, and was completed in 1868 and opened for public worship on January 27th 1869. The architect was William Corbett and the church is in the parish of St Joseph's. According to some reports, it was originally intended to be dedicated to St. Aloysius but when it was formally dedicated in 1869 it was called the 'Church of the Sacred Heart'.
The façade of the church is Classical/Grecian in design and was renovated in 1900. There are no aisles in the church but the nave had two rows of pews. The nave was extended in 1919. The ceiling of the church is panelled with floriated ornaments in Stucco work. The high altar was designed by William Corbett and is made from 22 types of precious marble. On the floor around the high altar, there are the symbols of the four writers of the Gospels. The angel represents Matthew, the lion represents Mark while Luke and John are represented by the bull and eagle respectively. Some of the stained glass windows throughout the church show the letters 'IHS'. These letters are the first three letters of the Greek word for Jesus which is IHSOUS. In Latin the letters stand for Jesus hominum salvator which translates as 'Jesus, Saviour of men'. There are nine mosaics above the high altar.
The central mosaic is of the Sacred Heart ascending in the presence of St Margaret Mary Alacoque and Blessed Claude la Colombiere. It is surrounded (from left to right) by depictions of St Francis Jerome, St Francis Borgia, St Francis Xavier, St Ignatius, St Stanislaus, St Aloysius, St John Berchmans and St Francis Regis.
Sadly, the church (& residence) formally closed in 2006 and is currently for sale - again! http://www.daft.ie/searchcommercial.daft?id=81592

Church in England to be restored by Catholic priests dedicated to Latin Masss, says Spero News [sic]

Editor: We heard earlier how Muslims are trying to occupy churches abandoned by the effete and ineffective types who generally control the Church in France. It's not like Muslims harass women or anything. We did see an SSPX priest take over a French parish in 1977, why not? Now we're hearing about a different kind of occupation taking place in blighty. It's as if the tabletistas have finally acquiesced to superior and more virile claims of authenticity.

The Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury, England, is in negotiations with the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest – a Catholic order that propagates the Latin Mass - to re-open a landmark church in the borough of Wirral. Located in northwest England along the Mersey River and adjacent to Wales, the church of Ss Peter and Paul's in New Brighton was closed by the Diocese of Shrewsbury in 2008 because it was deemed too large and expensive for its congregation. However, its side chapel was recently reopened to the public after a local campaign.

Now the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, a group which has experience of reopening churches, has expressed an interest in the site. Based near Florence, Italy, the order boasts approximately 70 priests and mainly concentrates on missionary work by running parishes and schools in 12 different countries.
