Maltese Order Distributing Birth Control in the Congo

Background to internal Maltese decisions, condom distribution, the "pills after" with nidation-inhibiting effect

Rome (kath.net/rn)  The Maltese and condom distribution. This story has caused the last few months of media attention and led to violent discussions within the Maltese Order. While various Maltese want to give the impression in the media that these stories were a few regrettable individual cases in the distant past that were immediately corrected, internal Maltese documents reveal that the story can still be assessed critically.

For example, on 12 December 2013 a board meeting was held by Maltese-International (MI). The kath.net audit shows Albrecht v. Boeselager and Ingo Radtke, the Secretary General of MI as participants. One of the agenda items was "reproductive health" and the distribution of condoms in Myanmar and southern Sudan. The board meeting clearly stated that a "red line" had been crossed here in connection with the teaching of the Church. It was decided that the whole thing should be further discussed in a working group with Bishop Stenger, the spiritual advisor of MI. The aim of the working group was to have clear guidelines on the subject (the editor's observation, which, however, has already been explained through the teaching of the Church).

Anyone who had thought that the meeting would in principle have clarified the issue among the Maltese would learn a few days later that not even the participants in the meeting had obviously taken this agenda item particularly seriously. Already a few days later, as in the Maltese Report "Commission of Inquiry", on 19 December 2013 an MI project, which included the distribution of condoms, was reintroduced and blessed by persons who had previously been present at the above meeting. The next project followed almost ten months later. Again, Myanmar has been conspicuous with condom distribution as explicitly outlined in the project description. The project was approved by the end of October 2014 for the project period January 2015 until the end of December 2016 (!).

The Maltese Order doesn't just only have a "condom problem" but also problems with the distribution of pills with "nidation-inhibiting effect". This is the result of an affidavit by Albrecht von Boeselager, which is available at kath.net. In the context of the problem of the distribution of the anti-baby pill in the Congo by Maltese International, Boeselager says: "In part, these women received a drug which, according to the general medical knowledge at the time, helped to rule out a conception and thus an unwanted pregnancy after rape (Levonogestrel) according to the latest findings ... The fact that this drug was used in East Congo was not known to me and was not caused by me."

Pills with a nidation-inhibiting effect do not actually prevent the conception, but the implantation of already begotten, human life into the uterus. This effect is therefore equivalent to an early abortion. This is confirmed, for example, by the Imabe-Institute of the Austrian Bishops' Conference on its homepage.

Interesting in this respect is a prominent Maltese from Belgium, who is at the same time a high-ranking employee of a pharmaceutical company that produces pills with the aforementioned active ingredient Levonorgestrel and other contraceptives.

Editor's note: It is undisputed that the Maltese International is doing incredibly valuable work for the poorest of the poor. [So are the Masons] At the very least, it is important for a Catholic organization to witness the faith and to adhere to the teachings of the Church. In the areas mentioned, this "red line" was clearly exceeded several times and the necessary responsibility for this has not been accepted.

Condom Knight Boeselager Triumphs Over Good With Pope's Help

Edit: the Order of Malta's condom distributing Grand Chancellor, Albrecht Boeselager, has given a public address wherein he avoids any explanations of the totals capitulation of the Order's sovereignty and praises Pope Bergoglio's autocratic takeover. If you listen to this public sinner's address, he offers no contrition for distributing condoms, and even expresses his own disapproval of the increasing border security in the face of Islamic invasion. Unlike his predecessors, he is surely a friend of Islam, and an enemy of Christ.

He virtue signals thusly:

We are alarmed and concerned by the proliferation of discriminatory positions towards immigrants, not least, based on their national origin. History has already provided us with plenty of examples showing the dramatic and monstrous consequences of policies based on origin and race. Likewise, the Government takes a strong stance against the increasing disregard for the humanitarian laws encoded in the Geneva Conventions ratified by the family of nations.

Fox News Attacks Catholic Church, Again

Edit: Not to be outdone by others, Fox News wants to join in on the Pope Bashig. Some may recall Sean Hannity’s disgraceful interview with Father Eutener where he insisted that he could call himself a Catholic in good standing and yet practice birth control or at least provide a sinful amount of adulation for those that do. It’s been pretty clear since then that these semi or faux-conservative type publications are either openly or passively hostile to Catholicism.

In this case, they’re simply declaring their allegiance to revolutionary principles like feminism and heaping the kind of contempt on the Catholic Church usually found only in America Magazine or the National Catholic Reporter.

VATICAN CITY – The Vatican's spokesman came to his press briefing Friday bearing flowers for female journalists to mark International Women's Day. "On behalf of all of us men, congratulations and happy Women's Day!" said a beaming Rev. Federico Lombardi.

A heartfelt gesture, to be sure, but one that came a day after an awkward acknowledgement: The upcoming election of the pope will be an all-male affair — except for the women who cook for, clean up after and serve the 115 cardinals who will pick the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, half of them women.

Lombardi's admission came when a reporter noted that one of the video clips the Vatican had provided of preparations in the Sistine Chapel featured a woman at a sewing machine, making the skirting for the tables where cardinals will sit. Aside from the seamstress, the reporter inquired, how many women are involved in the conclave process? Lombardi said the total number wouldn't be known until all Vatican personnel involved in the conclave take their oath of secrecy. But he noted that several women work at the Vatican's Santa Marta hotel, where the cardinals will eat and sleep during the conclave, which begins on Tuesday.

Phoney Catholics and Health Care "Reform"

In an ill-advised attempt to square liberalism and the Catholic Faith with Health care Reform, this Chicago "Catholic" writer tries to take Deal Hudson to task for his critical position by adopting an emotional argument, suggesting that we have a common goal of "abolishing abortion". I am not aware that this is a Catholic position. Unfortunately, abortion, like all sins will be part of the human condition until the last trumpet. This writer might not be aware of the irreconcilability of the Catholic Faith with funding for abortion, but he's not interested in truth, he's interested in promoting more socialism, defending the seamless garment mode of Chicago's own Cardinal Bernardin.

Deal Hudson--formerly of the conservative Catholic Crisis magazine--used his InsideCatholic blog to denounce two Catholic political interest groups lobbying for health care reform: Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good and Catholics United, although he calls them "fake" Catholic groups.

Hudson appoints himself the arbiter of what is Catholic, [so do you] and if you support health care reform that in any way might lead to an abortion paid for with public funds, you are not one. (Hudson told US News and World Report's Dan Gilgoff that calling the groups "fake" was "journalistic hyperbole," which I guess is another name for calling people names.) Hudson goes on at length to point out the connections these group have to the Democratic Party and George Soros (while not mentioning his own GOP paymasters, for whom he courted Catholics on behalf of previous administrations). [So?]

According to Hudson, Catholics should oppose health care reform if it in any way directs public money to abortion--even if it does practically guarantee health care for children already born. Abortion, after all, is a "non-negotiable," and you're a "fake" Catholic if you disagree with him. [He'd be right]

Well, I disagree with him, and if he wants to have a debate about whether I'm a Catholic, I say: Bring it, Deal. It's time for Catholics with actual knowledge of the breadth of the Catholic tradition to start speaking up for themselves before we all get read out the church.

Case in point on abortion: While the church does teach that procured abortion can never be morally justified--and Catholics are bound to that teaching--Catholics are free to hold different positions on how the right to life should be pursued in the public sphere. Our common goal is no abortions;[No it's not our common goal, we are still not allowed to participate in the procuring of an abortion, especially not with government money] our paths can differ. There is plenty of evidence that making abortion illegal actually does little to prevent it--it just forces women in crisis into dangerous and desperate situations. Catholics who argue that access to affordable health care and other progressive social policies will reduce abortion are on solid moral ground.

I'm not the only Catholic who is willing to do the difficult moral math and judge health care reform worth the difficulty surrounding abortion funding. On Christmas Day The New York Times reported that both the Catholic Health Association, which represents hundreds of Catholic hospitals, and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, whose member congregations built the bulk of the Catholic health care system in this country, came out in support of the Senate's approach to the segregation of public funds from premiums used to fund abortion coverage. (UPDATE: Sister Carol Keehan of the CHA denied any divergence between CHA and the bishops in a Catholic News Service story yesterday.)

In other words, you don't have to limit yourself to what is finally the clumsiest of moral arguments and say that abortion alone is the make-or-break issue for Catholics when it comes to health care reform. Catholic teaching has long recognized access to health care as a human (not merely civil) right. (And you'll note that the loudest voices on abortion have said next to nothing about the fact that more than 10 million undocumented immigrants are explicitly excluded from this measure, which should outrage any Catholic.)

Not all Catholics are willing to make the perfect the enemy of the good when health care for a further 31 million of our fellow citizens is at stake. And they're every bit as Catholic as Deal Hudson.
