Pope Drops “Vicar of Christ”

April 2, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – In a surprise move, Pope Francis has dropped the historic and essential title “Vicar of Christ” from the 2020 Pontifical Yearbook, the Holy See’s annual directory, relegating the title to a footnote, calling it a “historical title.”

While previous yearbooks listed the title “Vicar of Christ” and the name of the reigning Pope under that title, this year’s annual directory simply lists the name “Jorge Mario Bergoglio,” the name of the man who became Pope Francis in 2013. A photo of this year’s yearbook was published by Rome-based journalist Marco Tosatti.

Cardinal Gerhard Müller, former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, called the change “theological barbarism.”

  2. After seven years of this Catholic hating clown I think everybody has figured out he is not the vicar of Christ. Happy to know he agrees.

  3. The dropping of his title "Vicar of Christ" is not a formal, official act of the Pope. It's just a "pastoral" strategy of ecumenism.

  6. I've held the sedevacantist opinion since 2011.
    Jorge agrees with us.

  7. The title "Vicar of Christ" connotes that he is following in the footsteps of the first vicar in St. Peter. This action with just his name means that he believes that he is forging a new Church and that he is the first of the line. What is really troubling is that if you follow the logic, it would seem that he equates himself with the divine master.--- He would appear to be creating his own Church and not that of the one instituted by the Son of God. This is very troubling indeed and would have warranted a warning in 1917. That is what Fatima is now apparently all about.---- Malachi Martin died in 1999. He wrote of just this future scenario. Pope Francis took office in 2013. I would call this farsighted.---Nevertheless, you can go all the way back to 1917 for someone who was even more farsighted. The Mother of God gave the future in the Third Secret. Malachi Martin read the Third Secret in the original Portuguese of Sister Lucia. It now appears very likely that his writings were based on that knowledge and that the two predictions are linked.----The goal of Pope Francis has always been a one world socialist government. It would appear that the world Wuhan Virus is a step in that direction. I believe strongly that the disease came from the biological warfare center in Wuhan. Since China is now a known political ally of the pontiff through a concordat similar to that with Napoleon and Hitler, you have to look closely at whether the virus and the Vatican are linked.

  8. I don't know what the big deal is. By no stretch of the imagination can Francis be called "Vicar of Christ" thru his entire 7 years reign. So what's the big deal. He's just being honest.

  9. This reminds me of Paul VI giving away the papal tiara.

    1. Coincidentally "Paul VI" was the last "Pope" who receiced the traditional Papal coronation.

  10. This is surreal - even more than Pachamama, the destruction of the FFI, the ending of the excellent Paraguayan Archbishop's career, Amoris Laetitia [whatever], or his use of the Stang (a warlock's staff) during Mass. When I saw this, I assumed it must be some kind of grand conspiracy or joke dating to April 1st. It is still incredible.

  11. @Anonymous: I believe that we all have to take a deep breath here. Papa Ratzinger talked about the Apocalypse. Sister Lucia way back in 1917 and then told in about 1942 that whatever the Mother of God told her at the age of ten was found in the Bible and specifically in the Apocalypse. It sure looks like the pontiff is an anti pope and is the one mentioned in the Third Secret.---- If I was a betting man and anyone but Secretariat was running, I would say the odds are 9-5. I would say to go ahead and lay down a two dollar bet at Hialeah. You will win lots of moolah. The only trouble is that "when this pony comes in", there will no longer be any racetracks.

  13. No"James Deipnon", it is the opposite of what you say: the Pope is the bishop of Rome, or he could be at Avignon, as long as he has the Title of "Vicar of Christ". But for a Pope to say he is "no longer the Vicar of Christ", means he is no longer the Pope. Nonetheless, I do not believe the action of removing the title from documents changes his status as Pope, because it was not a formal declaration.

  15. "Vcar of St. Peter" and "Vicar of Christ" is the same, since St.Peter was the Vicar of Christ. You learn that in 9th grade math. If a=b, then a is b.
Peter is not restricted to the diocese of Rome. By tradition, it was decided that Rome would be the seat of Peter, because Peter died there. But Popes lived in Avignon, and can move elsewhere if needed. Every bishop has a titular seat. It does't mean ut has to be a functional title.

  16. Why argue with someone who not only has no faith, but is of bad will?

Moreover, he causes scandal in that he publishes lies about people he dislikes.

  17. This is a great idea! Better to be known as the CEO of a global business.....and Catholics can be simple employees, with fewer benefits.

  21. Anyone yet advocating for a bejeweled lapel pin Pope? Worked so well for many nuns who grew off the habit years ago.
Pontifical pectoral pin Pope! When he wears commoner garb, makes him more relevant and approachable.....at least that’s what Godless Europeans tell me.
