Did Pope Francis Deny Christ's Divinity?

By David Martin

The pope’s favorite interviewer has gone on record as saying that Francis denies the divinity of Christ. Italian journalist Eugenio Scalfari said on Wednesday that the pope told him that Jesus of Nazareth “was not God at all.”

In the October 9 issue of La Repubblica, Scalfari wrote: “Those who have had the chance, as I have had different times, to meet him [Pope Francis] and speak to him with the greatest cultural confidence, know that Pope Francis conceives Christ as Jesus of Nazareth, a man, not God incarnate. Once incarnated, Jesus ceases to be a God and becomes a man until his death on the cross.”

Scalfari cites examples in Scripture where Christ prayed, including the account of his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, to support his thesis that Jesus Christ was not divine. He continues: “When I happened to discuss these phrases, Pope Francis told me: ‘They are the definite proof that Jesus of Nazareth, once he became a man, even if he was a man of exceptional virtue, was not God at all.’”

The Vatican press office has discouraged the report, opining that Scalfari’s account merely represents “a personal and free interpretation of what he has heard.” Even so, the Vatican has not been able to refute the report with any certitude. The fact that Francis has done nothing to disavow the report tends to give it credence.

If the report is true, then Francis has unofficially professed the heresy of Arianism, which says that Christ on earth was not God Himself, the Second Person of the Trinity by Whom “all things” were made (John 1: 3), but was just a mere man.

This inference is encouraged when we consider Francis’ ongoing slight of doctrine and his repeated efforts to dissuade Catholics from attempting to convert members of other religions. If Francis has no confidence in the One True Church that Christ left us, would it not indicate that it is Christ Himself Whom he lacks confidence in?

This apostate attitude is certainly reflected in the Amazonian Synod presently underway in Rome. According to Archbishop Viganò, 'Christ is absent' from the synod's working document. Cardinal Burke has described the Synod as “a direct attack on the Lordship of Christ.” The synod is all about bowing to “mother-earth” in defiance of the everlasting ordinance that we bow only to Christ the King on His throne, so Scalfari’s claim about Francis is not far-fetched.

If it is, the pope will publicly disavow this, but if he doesn’t we can only infer that he blesses Scalfari, just as he has blessed him in the past by granting him new interviews after Scalfari had publicly attributed to him outlandish statements that contravene doctrine. If this isn’t an endorsement of Scalfari’s work, what is?

Surely Pope Francis and/or the Vatican need to refute this statement otherwise Catholics throughout the world could be led into schism? If the statement isn't true (please God) then denial is crucial. If it is nor denied then are we to believe it is true? If so what do we need to do about a schismatic pope?

We desperately need the Formal Correction to be issued before the end of this demonic Synod. If not, the intended German Synod, which is linked to the present Amazonian one, will cause the greatest of all schisms & one hopes the few prelates who speak from time to time against Modernism are ready for that outcome.

IF this is not a true statement, the Pope not only needs to deny it which would basically be calling Scalfari a liar, but he also needs to vehemently proclaim to the world in a public format that he indeed does believe whole heartedly that Jesus the Christ IS, HAS BEEN, AND ALWAYS WILL BE the second person of the Trinity, God the Son. He doesn't do that and we can absolutely take Scalfari's words to the bank. If this is true, then Bergoglio has put himself squarely outside of the Catholic Church! End of story!

This ought to set Taylor Marshall and all the radtrads on the course to schism.

Really well organized column, maybe it is the best ever on this site. It defines that this is nothing short of Arianism which brought out a number of councils to refute it. St. Patrick has the only known sensible definition for the Trinity. That would be the shamrock.---- We can only accept God for who he is. It must be remembered that the Christ did remark about the "end of the world". "I know neither the day nor the hour but only my father who sent me".---Christ as man is what drove Lucifer into a tizzy. I had a Jesuit when they walked with both feet on the ground without dragging their knuckles explain to me that Lucifer just couldn't accept an inferior creation having jurisdiction over him. As to what was removed from an altar at the St. Louis Cathedral in this "new age of enlightenment", "ipsa duce not fatigaris, miles Christi sum".---That is pretty much what defined Louis IX of France. The traditional Mass is a remembrance of the sacrifice of the Son of God in much the same manner as Abraham of the Old Testament. We can only accept his graces and do the best that we can in response to the apostate future pope written of by Malachi Martin who died in 1999. Francis was elected in 2013.

Now I understand why this poor heretic man never bent his knees in front of the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar.

It's also good to remember that since 2016 the Vatican News Service is entirely run by Accenture, the largest LGBT marketing firm in the world that has the advance of LGBT political agenda behind its every move. So, if the Vatican news service says this or that it is only done for political reasons, in this case, to placate conservatives and make things easier for Francis and Scalfari.

The time is getting near that I believe that the Mohammedans (Satan's army) will conduct a terror attack on the Vatican. St. Peter's will be no more. Vatican City will be in ruins.
The Divine Lord has been blasphemed by the person who claims to be Pope. He is spitting on God.
Remember the Divine vengeance at the base of Mount Sinai. It is coming again.

It's just a sortie of straw man arguments. Traditionalists only believe what the church has always and everwhere taught.

Another very slow day for Martin's predictable wheel barrow full of gossip and low grade hysteria. Bring back Nardi. At least he attempts credibility.

Re: PW - Defending the Faith from modernists is not gossip. To not agree with this "gossip" makes one a gossiper against Christ. Jesus said, 'You're either with me or against me.'

Well, Mr Martin, it is clear that you are some distance from Jesus Christ on this and a whole raft of matters. You need to understand that the Faith and your understanding of it are clearly two different things. At present, you're on tangent headed for schism and you don't even know it.

It is impossible to trust Eugenio Scalfani. He is the founder of the La Repubblica newspaper in which the article is printed, this means he can print whatever he wants there. He is an atheist. He is 95 years old and never takes notes. If he doesn't take notes and is 95, how can we trust any of his recollections? If he is an atheist, how can we trust that he does not have ulterior motives? It is not hard to see how statements affirming the full humanity of Christ can be twisted in a way as to reject His full divinity; that is too easy to do.

CFN report on Vatican press office official denial of Scalfani's article:

The Vatican say's Pope Francis didn't say this. Yeah, right. I believe them about as much as I believe that Santa Claus will be canonized a saint. And for those smart guys who might say "he was canonized (Saint Nicholas of Myra)" ....I mean the classic guy in the red suit...Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, etc.)

The Vatican is covering for their hero Pope Francis, just like they cover up for pervert Cardinals like ex-McCarrick, Cocopalmeiro, etc. etc. etc. and cover up the pedophile crisis.

Don't believe a word from the Vatican. It's all b.s, smoke n' mirrors tactics.

What needs to happen is for people not to let up on this.....to hound Francis and the Vatican until they clear it up.....and he resigns.

Re: Anonymous - It's true that we can't trust Scalfari for saying the truth, but as with Satan, he'll say the truth deceitfully to hang the Church. If you or I did something wrong, don't you think that Satan would report it accurately to hang us with? Scalfari loves these interviews because it's ammunition to attack the Faith. If he was lying about Francis, he [Francis] wouldn't keep going back to him for interviews. And whereas this latest account isn't based on a recent interview, there are instances in the past when the Vatican said that 'Francis never said this or that to Scalfari,' e.g. there is no eternal hell, only to learn later that he not only said them to Scalfari but published them in a Vatican document. Enough said. If Francis didn't say these things, let him publicly disavow them. If he doesn't, then clearly he consents to what Scalfari is saying.

@David Martin: Pretty much.

He will answer it just like the Dubia.

PW said...

The weak minded Burke and his lunatic German pal have concocted this bogus Dubia when, if they had paid enough attention to the study of Thomas Aquinas, they would know that Amoris Laetitia stands in the mainstream of Catholic pastoral theology. The bleats are for home consumption and to make sure the $$$ and the entitlements keep flowing in.
