Pope Francis Overturns Vatican Prohibition on Medjugorie

By David Martin

In a direct breach of a 2013 CDF decree, Pope Francis has decided to authorize pilgrimages to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, which can now be officially organized by dioceses and parishes without being restricted to a private capacity as before.

The announcement was made Sunday at the parish shrine in Medjugorie—held by millions to be the site of the Virgin Mary’s appearances to six children—by Archbishop Luigi Pezzuto, the Apostolic Nuncio to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Archbishop Henryk Hoser, the Holy See's Special Apostolic Visitator.

The "ad interim" director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, responding to journalists' questions about the Vatican announcement, said, "Considering the considerable flow of people who go to Medjugorje and the abundant fruits of grace that have sprung from it, this authorization is part of the particular pastoral attention that the Holy Father intended to give to that reality, aimed at encouraging and promoting the fruits of good."

Pope Benedict's Ruling Defied

The paradox of this authorization is that Medjugorie has no fruits to its credit. The Vatican announcement in fact defies the Church's previous position under Benedict XVI that the Virgin Mary never appeared to six children in Medjugorie.

At the direction of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Carlo Viganò, the former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States issued a letter on October 21, 2013, stating that Catholics "are not permitted" to participate in any meetings that promote belief in the Medjugorie visions. In his letter, Viganò said that "all should accept the declaration," stating that: "On the basis of the research that has been done, it is not possible to state that there were apparitions or supernatural revelations."

The declaration was based primarily on the verdict of the bishops of Yugoslavia on April 10, 1991, who decreed:

"On the basis of studies it cannot be affirmed that supernatural apparitions and revelations are occurring"

The bishops' denunciation was reflected in a March 25, 1985, letter from Bishop Zanic to the pastor of the Medjugorie Church, Fr. Tomislav Pervan, wherein he told him: "I demand from you that you remove the 'visionaries' from public display and put an end to their 'visions' in the parish church."

In October, 1993, Bishop Ratko Peric of Medjugorie was interviewed by Fr. Ante Tonca Komadina who at the time was editor of the diocesan newspaper, "Crkva na Kamenu." Therein the bishop backed the 1991 decision of his predecessor Bishop Zanic, saying:

“When he [Bishop Zanic] heard the small fibs and large lies, insincerities, inexactitudes, and all sorts of fabricated stories from those who claimed that the Gospa was appearing to them, he became totally convinced that it was not a matter of supernatural apparitions of the Gospa. Then he started to bring out the truth and to expose the falsehoods."

Started by Sex-Predator

From the onset, Medjugorie had every appearance of being fake, and in 2009 the Vatican issued a decree against Fr. Tomislav Vlasic—a fake mystic and sex-predator charged with abusing and impregnating a nun—who was the founder and central figure of the Medjugorie movement. He was punished and stripped of his priestly status on July 27, 2009, because he had continued with the movement in defiance of the 1991 episcopal decision in Yugoslavia.

Beginning in 1981, six children under the direction of Fr. Vlasic began making fraudulent claims of having seen the Virgin Mary in order to stir up mischief and to assist Vlasic’s efforts to undermine Bishop Zanic of Medjugorie.

Born of the Charismatics

Of key significance was the fact that Vlasic was heavily involved with the Charismatic Movement, a diabolical sect wherein the devil presents himself as the Holy Spirit to lure Catholics away from the institutionalized Church. Pope Paul VI condemned the Charismatics 1969 when he said it attacks "the very existence of the Church... extinguishing the real flame of Pentecost." (May 17, 1969)

Just prior to meeting the Medjugorie "seers" in 1981, Vlasic was in Rome to participate in the International Charismatic Renewal Conference, and there he was told by Sr. Briege McKenna, a false prophetess, that he would become the center of a worldwide Marian movement with the help of the "Holy Spirit." As soon as reports of "apparitions" began emerging from Medjugorie, Vlasic left his assignment at Čapljina for Medjugorie without the permission of his bishop (in violation of Canon 127), and became the spiritual director of the six children.

It was then that the Medjugorie cult began to solidify into what it was to become—a demonic monstrosity for the destruction of the Faithand it was Vlasic who directed the "seers" from thence on what they were to say in their messages. In 1984 he even wrote to Pope John Paul II to tell him that he was the one "who through divine providence guides the seers of Medjugorie."

“By Their Fruits You Shall Know Them”

The fruits of Medjugorie speak for themselves, which include a falling away from the sacraments, a departure from tradition, contempt for the priesthood, attendance at interfaith worship, entanglement in fake mysticism (sorcery), promiscuous behavior, and the illusion of unconditional mercy in spite of sin.

That is to say, Medjugorie is not Catholic but is a wing of the international New Age network that simply uses the name of Mary to bewitch the faithful with a new gospel. Medjugorie is all about advancing the Charismatic Movement, which is directly tied to the so-called renewal since Vatican Council II. It advocates one-world ecumenism and teaches that God works through other religions, which of course is heresy.

It was for reason that Bishop Andrea Gemma, the Vatican’s former top exorcist, described the Medjugorie visions as the "work of the devil."

Why is Pope Francis now authorizing pilgrimages to Medjugorie?

  1. Thanks for an excellent article, Mr Martin.

You ask a key question: "Why is Pope Francis now authorizing pilgrimages to Medjugorie?"

Several obvious answers spring to mind, none of them reflecting much credit on the Holy Father or the Vatican in general.

    1) Money. A poor village miles from any large town has been transformed into a money machine. How much of this has flowed into Church coffers, both locally and internationally, remains a troubling question.

    2) Some of the Medj messages mesh with Pope Francis' attitudes and themes popular since Vatican 2. The classic example is "The Blessed Mother says all religions are dear to her and her Son." This is an exact match for the sentiments in Document on Human Fraternity signed by Pope Francis and Sheik el-Tayyeb in Feb 2019.

    https://catholicherald.co.uk/issues/september-29th-2017/is-rome-changing-course-on-medjugorje/

    3) Utter desperation among many clergy for ANY signs of any religious revival. A phenomenon which seemingly attracts large numbers of earnest young people to prayer, confession, etc is going to unbalance the judgement of any number of well meaning priests and bishops.

The stop was temporary and in response to certain lobbies.
Also the seers were not allowed to pray at stadiums in Italy.

This is false. The Yugoslav Commission and the Ruini Commission( under Pope Benedict) did not condemn the apparitions.
The fruits of Medugorje are tremendous even skeptics observe that Medugorje has become a prayer movement within the Catholic Church.
It does not negate Fatima as many traditionalists believe.

    Lionel:
Correct - and neither was it said that there was no supernatural phenomena there. The origins of the phenomena may be disputed by skeptics but they do not deny that something supernatural is happening there. There is enough video material and personal testimonies to corroborate that there is something supernatural happening at Medugorje.

    Lionel:
The bishops at Mostar still oppose the apparitions. However the Vatican over ruled them from the time of Pope John Paul II. Catholic Mariologists supported Medugorje.

Medugorje is not 'born of the Charismatics'. However it has been a big boost to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and also to other Catholic religious lay movements. It haw now emerged as a movement in itself.

There is no change in faith at Medugorje as compared to for example, Croatia, Slovakia or other Slavic countries in the region. It is the same faith.
    ___________________________

    contempt for the priesthood,
Lionel: There is no contempt for the priesthood at Medugoje. They are part of the universal understanding of the priesthood and how Pope Francis projects it. The seers cannot be blamed for it .
Many priests have had their vocation strengthened and many have found their vocation at Medugorje.

attendance at interfaith worship, entanglement in fake mysticism (sorcery), promiscuous behavior, and the illusion of unconditional mercy in spite of sin.

Lionel: God can work through other religions even though other religions are not paths to salvation.
The traditionalists like Pope Francis do not affirm extra ecclesiam nulla salus like the Magisterium in the 16th century.Neither does Pope Benedict and Pope Francis or the Franciscans at Medugorje. Ou Lady at Medugorje is in step with this Church.
If she would affirm Feeneyite EENS,. EENS according to the Magisterium and missionaries of the 16th century it would be the end of the apparitions and all her pastoral work at Medugorje would end.
At other apparitions, including an on going one in Brazil, Our Lady affirms the strict interpretation of EENS. Of course the liberal bishop has restricted that apparition site.

My guess is that it has to do with the money involved. Shrines are big business and P(?)F wants his cut. When it comes to this papacy all actions have to be suspect.

As for Francis' authorization, it is null.

As to why he allows it, Michael Dowd has the right idea: it brings money and tourism and spurs the very movement responsible for his formation---the Charismatic Movement.

Nearly 30 yrs ago they said Our Lady requested a Church to be built, have they not collected enough over the last 3 decades to buy the first brick.

  11. David Martin, these are the fruits of Medjugorje as reported by Archbishop Henryk Hoser.
He said that the Medjugorje phenomenon has contributed to 610 priestly vocations, the greatest number of vocations going to Italy, the United States and Germany.
He stated that between 1986 to present, 37 million Holy Communions have been distributed.
The parish of Medjugorje has hosted seminars for the past 23 years. For the last 21 years, there has been an annual seminar for priests; the past 17 years, there has been an annual seminar for married couples; the past 4 years for doctors and people in the medical profession; and for the past year, a seminar for people who work for the protection of human life and a seminar for people with disabilities.
The Mother's Village is a work of love that aids orphans, people who suffer from addiction and the disabled.
The House of Spiritual Exercises has hosted 1,200 groups representing 42,000 participants over the years.
He said the Shrine provides individual confessions, Eucharistic Adoration, the prayer of the Way of the Cross, and the Rosary. He stated that all those are available at Medjugorje at a time when many places do not offer individual confessions, Eucharistic adoration, the Way of the Cross and prayer of the Rosary.

  12. Bergolio knows Medjigorje is a fraud that's why he allowed pilgrimages. HE DOESN'T believe in Jesus, The Church. Therefore, might as well discredit the Church by filling it with diabolical, satanic tales and legends. If people increase devotion to our lady at Medjigorje they will stray from the Chuch. From Jesus. As planned.

  14. Medjugorje is spelled M e d j u g o r j e not Medjigorje. People who have devotion to Our Lady of Medjugorje do not stray from Jesus, they increase their love for Him. Did you know that Archbishop Hoser (Apostolic Administrator) was the priest that was assigned to Kibeho after the horror of the genocide between the Tutsis and Hutus in Rwanda? He helped at the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Kibeho. Archbishop Hoser knows first hand the horror of murder that resulted when people did not do what Our Lady urged in her messages there. Archbishop Hoser is motivated by this past experience to urge Europeans and all people of faith to come to Medjugorje and to make peace with God there and to find peace in their hearts and to turn from sin because the judgement draws near. I would rather believe and be glad that sinners turn from their sinful ways than sneer at these interventions by Our Heavenly Mother.

Look, the people who are responsible for Medjugorgie, are the same people behind the Disney corporation...

And I don’t say that tongue and cheek. I mean it literally...

Many of the people in Rome that you are so familiar with, are NOT who they say they are...

Take freaky Francis for example: We have no idea who this fella is. The only thing he has ever presented as proof of his identity is that fake I.D. from Argentina ... That’s it ...

And if the truth be known, he is really Jonathan Pryce with rubber sh*t on his face ...

It really is time to wake up, people... You are being lied to on a scale that is almost unbelievable...

  18. I read an article once, where a reporter, who did not believe in the "seers" of this place decided to play a little game with them while they were supposed ly praying on their knees in "ecstasy" right when the Blessed Virgin Mary was supposed to have appeared before them. He positioned himself next to the oldest girl who was kneeling, staring upwards, and whispering prayers. Knowing full well about religious ecstasy of the Saints, etc., when nothing would disturb them from their state ecstasy, he lit a match and help it up to her eye, knowing that it she were telling the truth, it would not phase her.
She blinked, and her eyes shot over to him..... She was caught. Now he knew she had been faking.
It's been a fake for 35+ years. These seers have made a good living off of their trick. One of the girls supposedly was going to be a nun. She didn't. She'd married with a family.
But even if this place is a fake, it may have increased devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to Jesus and the Church among some people. It may have restored Faith in some. It may have given rise to vocations.
That is all well and good. But the bottom line is that Pope Benedict's Vatican basically did things the right way, investigated it and declared it basically a fraud. Francis on the other hand, doesn't care, and allows for the charade to continue. Blasphemy.
But even though the faithful have been duped, the one positive thing is that it has renewed Faith in some people who believe.
The crime, however, is that it's fake. And this Pope is approving a phoney site, and people who are actors, not "seers". People who are genuine about the Faith did what Pope Benedict XVI did with his commission. People who don't care if it's a circus and a charade and people are being cheated and duped do what Francis has done.

  19. Damian, with all due respect you have several factual errors in your post as does David Martin in this article. The videographer did not hold up a lit match to Vicka. He made a gesture as to attempt to gouge out her eyes. She recoiled just slightly but did not avert her gaze from the Virgin Mary who appeared above her. That video has several errors in it that are easily debunked. Archbishop Hoser has been sent there for the pastoral care for the pilgrims. He ensures that there are sufficient numbers of priests to hear confessions in the dozens of different languages that the various pilgrims require. Archbishop Hoser was actually a doctor before he began missionary work in Africa. He is an excellent choice for the pastoral care of pilgrims. He would betray his vocation to support lies and deceit. You readers should take care that you haven't been misinformed about the various beautiful conversions and healings that are taking place.

Recoiling slightly still proves she was faking. People in ecstasy are totally oblivious to that around them.

I still don't believe in it. I believe in Pope Benedict's commission. And even JPII before him, his examiners and bishops had negative reports. At one time the bishop of Mostar said it was a fake.

    1. Mr. Watson, I am not seeking"positive strategy" to deal with the VC2 problems. The way Vatican I defined Papal Infallibility and encouraged a broad definition, without much nuance was a problem. The Second Council made the Pope look more authoritative than Tradition [Doctrines and Dogmas]itself. It rests to be sure that the future will downplay and limit the arbitrariness of Papalism and statements. Without even getting too deep into Fatima, it does not require in this time in history a deep vision of the future of what is to happen: Russia has separated itself from the Orthodox Church. It is isolated not only politically and economically but theologically as well. The Pope has always been feared as too powerful and a threat to Tradition. But with a new and more balanced view resulting from the crisis of Papal absolutism, the Russians will be encouraged to join the Catholic Church. The US will be put in check and may start questioning its moral imperfections. The Protestants will see Catholics as more balanced and with a more clear teaching of Papal Authority; The NeoNazi state of Israel and Zionism will see a superpower challenging their friends in the EU and US. And bloodthirsty pro-German Nazi Ukrainian Catholics will be put in check.
The only issue is when, not if, Russia will convert. I am confidant. But it may take a little more patience. All these post Vatican II "new ecclesiastic movements" are like. And in the case if my cousin, well, its both and effect of her sickness of an untempered, UnReasoned faith that is both sickness and demonically inspired to lead many like her into madness and her children into relgious apathy.

    2. Actually, Gaybrielle, the strategy of having large families while fostering vocations to the priesthood does seem to be working. 50 years ago, almost no one knew the real Mass could be heard, now it is well-known, and there are plenty of options... as much as it might concern you.

Even on you-Tube, the popularity of the real Mass is evident as videos of it and events with the Traditional societies receive millions of views, while ugly felt banner festivals with fluffy diabetic cat ladies processing while holding aloft giant bowls filled with burning sage get about 100 hits.

Sounds like your childless lavender parishes are the failures.

  28. One of the main problems with the Medj nonsense is that it extolls, as its main tenet, having personal spiritual experiences, rather than relying on Church teaching. There are those who cannot accept Church teaching as it is, or who have trouble accepting it, and so they must have so-called personal spiritual experiences to really believe that God exists. That's quite sad. Gnosticism is also based on having personal spiritual experiences.

It's nothing but a huge hall with a stage. But it was exactly the same as a Catholic Charismatic service. So if Medjugorie is like that, then they're not Catholics.

  37. Chiara Amirante: Pope Francis told me "I saved Medjugorje"
Translation of the Aletia report Chiara Amirante: Papa Francesco mi ha detto “ho salvato io Medjugorje”. Nov 02, 2018

THE FOUNDER OF NEW HORIZONS REVEALS A PRIVATE INTERVIEW SHE HAD WITH THE POPE : POPE FRANCIS TOLD HER THAT ON THE BASIS OF MANY FALSE REPORTS FROM THE CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH HE HAD SAID THAT MEDUGORJE WAS FALSE.

In a series of private meetings with Pope Francis the Marian phenomena of Medjugorje was discussed.
Chiara Amirante, founder of the New Horizons community, said she was authorized by the pontiff to publicize one of these talks. So she did just this in one of her trips to the Bosnian village. Those present reported it, it was posted on Facebook and mentioned by a Medjugorje blog.
While recognizing the fruits of grace coming from there, Pope Francis had always been slightly skeptical about the apparitions of the visionaries with pre-established dates and times, and about the words that the Virgin would tell them.
When the pope said that this was not the Mother of Jesus I was in great sorrow sais Chiara Amirante.
But from the report of Chiara Amirante new facts emerge on Medugorje and Pope Francis views.

    "You can say it"

«I do not know by what grace I was appointed by John Paul II as a Consultant to the Office for the Pastoral Care of Migrants," said Chiara Amirante, "and then for the New Evangelization from Pope Benedict; then now at the Synod. This gave me the opportunity to speak with Pope Francis. Truly after his first affirmation I had the opportunity to speak with him for an hour also about Medjugorje. He told me,"At the other times there was the secret of the office. This time, Chiara, you can announce it".

    76 thousand messages

And therefore, continues Amirante, "I have the Pope's blessing to be able to tell you. I went to talk to him, because I understood that the voices that were circulating in the Vatican about Medjugorje were a bit false because there were few people (from the Vatican ) who do not come here to Medugorje. So he gets a lot of news that is not true. This includes the information that there would be 76,000 messages. This is a piece of news that I have not heard." said Chiara."However it made Pope Francesco believe that it was true that Our Lady gave different appointments to different visionaries every day, to say different things. "No - I told him -Holy Father, it is not really so, in the sense that in reality the messages are 682 to date". There is the one of the 25th and then that of the 2nd day of the month. So I understand that if they let you know that the Madonna says every minute: "now I give a message here and then a message there", this can cause some confusion".

    One year of private interviews
And then, underlines the founder of Nuovi Orizzonti, the pope mentioned positive things [about Medjugorje]. We have been talking about the misunderstandings about Medjugorje for a year now. So I already knew all that he had done.
But he said to me: "Chiara, look, it is I who saved Medjugorje.Since the Commission of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, on the basis of so many false reports, had already said that Medjugorje is false. So it is I who then saved Medjugorje. It is I who care about Medjugorje. It is I who sent Hoser because I believe that the fruits are many and unequivocal at Medugorje and I had mentoned this at the earlier Press Conference".

  38. Pope Francis says he is responsible for saving Medugorje - but we have to really thank Chiara Amirante the founder of Nuovi Orizzonti who convinced Pope Francis that the Mother of Jesus was really appearing at Medugorje.

She had spoken to the pope in a series of meetings as a member of pontifical organizations. At one meeting for over an hour she spoke only about Medugorje.
Some six months back Pope Francis told her that he had saved Medugorje and that his 'postman theory' was based upon false information he received from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. who were against Medugorje.

  39. All I can say is that if Francis Bergoglio has approved Medjugorje then it's false.

  40. The bottom line: Medjugorie is not Catholic, though there are Catholics that go there. But the consistent fruits are that it de-Catholicizes them by profaning and pulling them away from the sacraments, turning them against the priesthood, turning them against doctrine and tradition, e.g. teaching that God embraces all religions. But especially and most hypocritically, it denigrates the Mother of God by saying that we pray "with Mary" and not "to Her." The hold to the fallacy that Mary is our sister and not our Mother. The end result of Medjugorie is Protestantism and interfaith worship, which is condemned from the beginning.

And no, there are no miracles or supernatural phenomena connected with Medgugorie. The bishops of Yugoslavia unanimously decre in 1991:

"On the basis of studies it cannot be affirmed that supernatural apparitions and
    revelations are occurring."

Benedict XVI made their judgment his own when he took the ax to Medjugorie in 2009, at which time its sex-predator Founder "Fr." Vlasic was defrocked for engaging in fake mysticism and promiscuity. Don't forget, it was Vlasic and not the six children who came up with the Medjugorie messages. He simply told the children to repeat what he gave them.

To "anonymous" I retort by saying that, yes, the Medjugorje phenomenon has contributed to 610 CORRUPT priestly vocations (all modernists and confused Charismatics), and that between 1986 to present, 37 million SACRILEGIOUS Holy Communions have been distributed, i.e. receiving in the hand, with laughter, all to the beat pop culture. Medjugorie indeed is about profaning the Mass and Eucharist. Abp Hoser is a heretic so it is a disgrace to listen to his words on this.
